Nehru Family Tree

The Nehru family is very important and well-known name in the Indian political history. Its political involvement has been seen around the Indian National Congress and many individuals of the family have administered over the Congress political party since the independence of India. The Nehru family is also often referred as the Nehru-Gandhi family since the Gandhi family name was derived from Feroze Gandhi whom Indira Priyadarshini Nehru got married to and then decided to change her name. First Generation

  • Gangadhar Nehru

He was an Indian police service official who remained at the position of Delhi’s last Kotwal of Delhi before the famous rebellion of the year 1857.   His son Motilal Nehru who was a freedom fighter. Gangadhar Nehru’s wife, Jeorani belonged to this generation.

Second Generation

  • Bansi Dhar Nehru

He was the eldest son of Gangadhar Nehru and worked with the British government’s judicial wing.  He was partly separated with the other members of the family as he was appointed on various different positions.

  • Nandlal Nehru

He was brother of Motilal Nehru and was the Dewan of Khetni which was then a princely state.

  • Motilal Nehru

Motilal Nehru was the patriarch of the family and a lawyer by profession. He was a prominent figure in the Independence movement and also served in the Congress as President twice.

  • Swarup Rani Nehru

She was Motilal Nehru’s wife and was an active participant of the Independence movement of the country when both her son and her husband were put behind bars by the British.

Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first ever Prime Minister and was one of the most integral leader in the Indian Independence fight.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was a prominent Indian leader and played a huge part in the Indian independence movement. He was born and raised in Gujarat state, Western India and did his studies law in London.  After he returned to India in year 1915, he assumed leadership of the Indian National Congress and started the most popular and useful movement against the British rule. In year 1883, when he was just 13 years old, he was being married to Kasturba Kapadia who was then 14 years old only. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948)

Gandhiji got married at a very young age. His bride remained at her parent’s house for a long time before she started living with him.  He married Kasturba following Hindu arranged marriage traditions and in his own words he described the day of his marriage as – “As we didn’t know much about marriage, for them it meant only wearing new clothes, eating sweets and playing with relatives.”

Kasturba Gandhi (1869-1944)

Kastur Kapadia and later Kasturba Gandhi was the wife of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Besides being known as the wife of Gandhi, she was a political activist who fought for the civil rights and for Indian independence from the British.
